The Caribbean Medical Journal (CMJ) is recruiting a motivated and organised Co-Deputy Editor. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a platform that showcases medical and health-related research within the vibrant Caribbean region. The CMJ is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal, emphasizing original articles, reviews, case reports, viewpoints, short reports, and letters to the editor in clinical medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, and allied health specialties.
As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of medical research dissemination, working remotely with a diverse, international team dedicated to highlighting key work from the Caribbean. This role is more than a position – it’s a chance to make a real impact in the scientific community.
Overall Responsibilities
The Deputy Editor will assist in overseeing the editorial processes of the CMJ and will work towards the publication of high-quality articles. The Deputy Editor will:
- Oversee the peer review process ensuring that the process is fair, transparent, conducted with integrity and consistent with the journal’s policies
- Help refine editorial processes to ensure the peer review process is an efficient and constructive experience for authors and reviewers
- Oversee the copyediting and production processes
- Support and advise the editorial team as necessary
- Supervise the journal’s response to research or publication integrity issues, editorial appeals, conflicts of interest, complaints and reader feedback
- Ensure scientific accuracy and credibility of all content published by the journal
- Lead by example and display qualities of respect, honesty and transparency
- Work together with the co-deputy editor and chief editors to achieve the journal’s editorial vision
Specific responsibilities
- Planning and efficient execution of the compilation of the journal’s issues
- Support journal development with an aim towards PubMed Indexing
- Provide direct support for the section and assistant editors
- Continuously build the database of suitable peer reviewers for the journal
- Assist with screening all manuscripts on submission for suitability for peer review based on the journal’s aims and scope
- Provide editorial recommendations on submitted articles
Requirements
- Healthcare degrees at the postgraduate level
- Qualifications and/or training in statistics and/or qualitative research would be beneficial
- Experience conducting health research, publishing articles and peer reviewing
- Well-organised, efficient, motivated, good communicator
- Good time management skills
- Attention to detail
- Proactive, able to adapt to a changing environment
- Willingness to work in teams and as an individual

This position is voluntary and remote. Editors can work from anywhere in the world. The time commitment is variable with increased demand closer to quarterly publication dates, but averages 2-3 hours/week.

Key Responsibilities
The production editor will coordinate the quarterly publication of CMJ issues, ensuring that production schedules and standards are met. The Production Editor will:
- Manage production of articles from acceptance to online publication including:
- Co-ordinating the copyediting of articles once accepted
- Typesetting of copyedited articles into PDF and web format
- Co-ordinating timely publication of articles and issues on the journal’s website
- Create and register DOIs and associated metadata for published articles.
- Update and maintain metadata.
- Offer comprehensive support to authors both during and after the publication process, including addressing queries on article status and informing authors once articles have been published.
- Collaborate closely with assistant editors, the copyediting team and web manager to ensure the timely and efficient publication of articles.
- Provide regular status reports to the Chief Editors on quarterly issue progress.
- Collaborate closely with fellow editors, contributing to our shared editorial vision.
- Actively participate in journal development, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives.
Requirements
- Strong computing skills with knowledge of or a willingness to learn about publishing formats including (PDF, web formats, Microsoft Publisher, WordPress)
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about scientific journal indexing and DOIs (CrossRef, PubMed, DOI, DOAJ)
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Strong time management skills and adaptability.
- A team player who can also work independently.

The web manager will:
- Upload new articles and quarterly issues onto the CMJ website including the conversion of word processor documents to html (within WordPress).
- Upload new content to the CMJ website as required
- Continue to develop of the website’s design and structure and identify methods to improve the user experience
- Manage the website’s domain and hosting registration
- Perform tests to ensure efficiency of the website
- Advise and implement website security measures
- Respond to breaches in website security
- Respond to, troubleshoot and resolve website issues
- Collaborate closely with the production editor to ensure the timely and efficient publication of articles and issues.
- Provide regular status reports on issue progress
- Collaborate closely with fellow editors, contributing to our shared editorial vision.
- Actively participate in journal development, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives
Requirements
- Proficient in html, CSS, and WordPress
- Knowledge of web security
- Ability to troubleshoot website issues
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail

About the Internship
This position is intended for persons who are keen to learn about what goes on behind the scenes at a peer-reviewed scientific journal from article submission to final publication. There are two main processes involved in making a submitted article available to the scientific community: peer review (ensuring the article meets scientific standards for publication) and production (ensuring the article is properly formatted, well-presented and made available to the scientific community in print and/or online formats). Interns will be assigned tasks related to these in accordance with to their unique interests and skill set, and interns will be welcome to request tasks that interest them.
What this is not
This internship is not about conducting clinical research. It is about taking already-written articles through editorial processes so that it can be published and made available to the scientific community.
Examples of projects or tasks to which Editorial Interns may be assigned:
- Create and register DOIs and associated metadata for published articles.
- Create Web Pages for accepted articles.
- Create PDF documents for accepted articles.
- Copyedit accepted articles.
- Assist with website redesign and development.
- Assist with workflow and organisational development
- Assist with developing the peer reviewer database
- Assisting editors with the peer review process e.g. sending emails to peer reviewers and updating authors
Basic requirements:
- Basic computing skills including word processing and e-mail
- An interest in the scientific editorial world!
- Creative and motivated
Desirable skills (one or more of these will be a plus):
- Strong computing skills
- Experience with Microsoft Publisher
- Experience with WordPress
- Web development experience
- Experience with workflow management apps and software
- Strong organisational skills
Working Conditions
This position is voluntary and remote. Editorial interns can work from anywhere in the world. The time commitment averages 2-4 hours/week. This is a short-term engagement lasting 3 months with the possibility of renewal if there is interest from both parties.
