Call for Applications for Co-Chief Editor, Deputy Editor and Assistant Editors for the Caribbean Medical Journal
The Caribbean Medical Journal invites expressions of interest for the positions of Co-Chief Editor (CEIC), Deputy Editor (DE) and Assistant Editors (AE).
Candidates for CEIC and DE should be preferably a well-established researcher in healthcare, with a good record of publications and some editorial experience.
Candidates for AE should have a fair understanding of the basic process of conducting research and are able to voluntarily commit time consistently to the editing process.
The role provides you with detailed insight into how the journal works, the publication process of an article and a better understanding of how to write a good peer review.
Please note that ALL positions are voluntary. There is no financial or other compensation. Depending on the rate and volume of submissions, the time commitment is estimated to be 2-3 hours per week.

About the Caribbean Medical Journal
The Caribbean Medical Journal (CMJ) is the official research publication of the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA). This is in fulfilment of the motto: Teach, Treat, Mentor and Advocate to and on behalf of the physicians and patients that we serve.
The CMJ is an open access, peer reviewed journal that reports research in the areas of clinical medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacology and allied health specialties. The journal aims to showcase research within the Caribbean region publishing original articles, reviews, case reports, viewpoints, short reports and letters to the editor.
Overview of roles and responsibilities of CoChief Editors and Deputy Editor
The Caribbean Medical Journal has two Chief Editors who share roles and responsibilities. The chief editors will contribute to the overall development of the Caribbean Medical Journal including implementing the editorial strategy and policies. Chief editors will also be accountable for the scientific content of the journal. The Chief editors are responsible for appointing and leading the editorial team and will maintain the highest ethical standards in journal editing. The Co-Chief Editors should not be involved in a similar role or significant editorial activity in another journal that may be viewed as a competitor to the Caribbean Medical Journal. Editors can still function as peer reviewers or Editorial Board members of other journals.
General roles and responsibilities
- Responsible for all scientific and academic content published by the journal
- Oversee the peer review process ensuring that the process is fair, transparent and conducted with integrity and consistent with the journal’s policies
- Refining editorial processes to ensure the peer review process is an efficient and constructive experience for authors and reviewers
- Oversee the copyediting and production processes
- Support and advise editorial team as necessary
- Supervise the journal’s response to research or publication integrity issues, editorial appeals, conflicts of interest, complaints and reader feedback
- Contribute to building a peer reviewer database for the journal
- Ensure scientific accuracy and credibility of all content published by the journal
- Lead by example and display qualities of respect, honesty and transparency
- Work together with the Editorial team to achieve the journal’s editorial vision
- Work with the Operations team to achieve journal development
CO – CHIEF EDITOR
Specific roles and responsibilities
- Screening all manuscripts on submission for suitability for peer review based on the journal’s aims and scope
- Providing the final editorial decision on whether to accept or reject an article after peer review.
- Planning and efficient execution of the compilation of the journal’s issues
- Support journal development with an aim towards PubMed Indexing
DEPUTY EDITOR
Specific roles and responsibilities
- Planning and efficient execution of the compilation of the journal’s issues
- Support journal development with an aim towards PubMed Indexing
- Direct support for the section and assistant editors
- Build a database of suitable peer reviewers for the journal
- Provide editorial decisions on whether to accept or reject an article after peer review, where appropriate
- Work with Chief Editors to achieve the journal’s editorial vision
- Work with the Operations team to achieve journal development
ASSISTANT EDITORS
Main roles and responsibilities
- Screen manuscripts to ensure the manuscript meets the journal’s minimum requirements
- Liaise with co-chief editors regarding screening of manuscripts for suitability
- Identify and assign peer reviewers for manuscripts assigned to you to manage
- Manage an average of 15 articles per year
- Follow up with peer reviewers to ensure timely feedback on manuscripts
- Liaise with section editors regarding decisions on manuscripts
- Responding to author enquiries where appropriate
- Liaise with copyediting and production team
- Work with other assistant editors and section editors to achieve the journal’s editorial vision
- Contribute to journal development by giving constructive feedback and ideas for development
- attend monthly update meetings with journal leadership
- report to journal leadership on progress of assigned tasks as and when required/requested.
